Family Self-Sufficiency Program Partners with SmartBank® for Financial Literacy

DOTHAN, AL - On Tuesday, May 24, 2022, the Building Opportunities towards Self-Sufficiency (BOSS) 501(c)(3) affiliate of Dothan Housing held its first Financial Literacy class featuring notable community partner SmartBank. This class is the first of a series of three and aims to assist residents, and community members build better financial practices as individuals and for their families. The class led by SmartBank's® Regional President, Jeff Williams, entitled Your Money Values & Influences and addressed several subtopics, including Fannie Mae Home Ready Program, Understanding Homeownership vs. Renting, current Appreciation Standards, Understanding the Individual Retirement Account, Purchases to Avoid, and much more.

Attendees were able to ask questions regarding budgeting, vehicle purchasing, business growth, and family development. If Mr. Williams could offer any advice to himself 20 years ago or younger citizens concerning financial success, it would be to "...contribute as much money as possible to retirement especially if your employer matches contributions...". Additional advice includes:

  • Having a financial accountability partner.
  • Creating running budgets.
  • Saying "No" to frivolous spending.

BOSS was pleased to bring this successful series to the community, and they look forward to the additional classes taking place on June 14, 2022, and June 22, 2022, at 10:00 am. Financial Literacy classes are open to all and are part of the Family Self-Sufficiency program. Anyone interested in attending can do so at the Our Community Housing and Enrichment Center (OCHEC), formerly the Old Montana Street School at 1001 Montana Street, Dothan, AL 36303.
